The Moxa SFP-1G20ALC is a
Gigabit Ethernet SFP module of the SFP-1G series, developed as optional accessory for industrial Ethernet switches from Moxa. It enables wireless connection via fiber optic cables and allows extending existing networks with an
optical interface featuring high bandwidth and range. The module is
hot-pluggable, meaning it can be inserted into or removed from the switch without interrupting network operation. It supports
digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM), enabling real-time monitoring of optical parameters such as transmit power, receive sensitivity, and temperature to detect network issues early.
Applications
This module is designed for industrial applications requiring high reliability, temperature resistance, and harsh environmental conditions. It is suitable for use in production facilities, power supply networks, transportation systems, or marine environments, where stable and low-maintenance communication links are essential. The
operating temperature range of -40 to 85 °C (T-model) makes it suitable for extreme environments, such as outdoor installations, climate control systems, or vehicles.
Functions and Features in Detail
The SFP-1G20ALC operates with
differential LVPECL signals and
TTL detection, ensuring stable and noise-resistant signal transmission. It features an
LC duplex connector, used for connection to standard fiber optic cables. The model designation SFP-1G20ALC indicates
single-mode transceiver technology, operating at a wavelength of
1310 nm and enabling a maximum reach of
20 km. This is particularly relevant for long-distance connections in industrial networks, where copper cables are no longer feasible due to range or susceptibility to interference.
Technology Explained Simply
The
optical power of the module ranges from -9.5 to +5 dBm (transmit power) and a sensitivity up to -33 dBm (receive). The
link budget is up to 31 dB, describing the maximum attenuation the signal can overcome over the cable without breaking the connection. The
dispersion penalty of 1–5 dB accounts for signal distortion caused by chromatic dispersion, which occurs over long fiber optic links. For models with higher reach such as SFP-LHX, ZX, EZX, EZX-120, and WDM models, an
attenuator is recommended to optimize signal quality.
Compatibility and Accessories
The module is compatible with a wide range of
industrial Ethernet switches from Moxa that feature SFP slots. It is part of the SFP-1G series, which also includes models for multi-mode and WDM fibers. The WDM models (e.g. SFP-20A/B) allow using two wavelengths on a single cable, increasing the capacity of existing fiber optic infrastructures. The use of
certified cables is required for certain models (e.g. SFP-LSX with OM1/OM2) to achieve full reach.
Installation and Mounting
Installation is done by simply inserting the module into the SFP slot of the switch. Due to the hot-pluggable feature, no network downtime is required. Connection to the fiber optic cable is made via the LC duplex connector.
Power supply is provided by the switch; the module consumes a maximum of 1 W.
Operational Advantages
The combination of
wide temperature range,
DDM function,
hot-pluggable design, and
high reach makes the module a robust solution for demanding industrial environments. The
5-year warranty underscores the product’s reliability.
