The Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP+) is the next generation of interchangeable transceiver modules designed for use in compatible active network components. It is smaller than other available form factors and offers the highest density per interface. Almost all modern network devices with 10G slots are equipped with SFP+ ports, which are identical in design to SFP modules but provide higher performance. This flexibility allows users to configure and expand networks with ease. Thanks to its hot-swap design, SFP+ modules can be replaced during operation without disrupting the network.
The SFP+ is selected based on the cable medium used (multimode, single-mode, or simplex) and bandwidth requirements. The Multi Source Agreement (MSA) specifications and SFF-8472 standards ensure a uniform design and functionality, including optional Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM). This feature significantly improves optical connection monitoring.
SFP+ modules support bandwidths from 8.5 GBit/s to 11.1 GBit/s and cover applications such as 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 8 Gigabit Fibre Channel, and STM-64 (SDH). Depending on the model, ranges from 300 m to 80 km are supported.
