Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) is an exchangeable transceiver module used in compatible active devices. It is compact, smaller than all currently available form factors, and offers the highest density per line interface. Many modern network devices are equipped with slots for modular optical transceivers, providing maximum flexibility in network configuration. Thanks to its special design, installation or replacement can occur during operation (hot-swap) without disrupting the network.
The appropriate SFP module is selected based on the cable medium (multimode, single mode, simplex, or twisted pair) and the desired bandwidth. Standards such as the Multi Source Agreement (MSA) and SFF-8472 specification ensure standardized design and offer optional features such as digital diagnostic capabilities.
With a maximum bandwidth of up to 1.25 GBit/s, the SFP modules support both Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit Fibre Channel. Various models are tailored for different ranges, temperature conditions, and applications.
