The Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) is an exchangeable transceiver module used in compatible active devices. Its compact design makes it smaller than all currently available form factors, providing the highest density per line interface. Many modern networking devices are already equipped with slots for modular optical transceivers, giving users maximum flexibility in network configuration. Due to its special design, installation can also be performed during operation (hot-swap) without disrupting the network.
The selection of the appropriate SFP module depends on the type of cable used (multimode, single mode, simplex, or twisted pair) and the required bandwidth. Standards such as the Multi Source Agreement (MSA) and the SFF-8472 specification ensure a standardized design and provide additional benefits such as optional digital diagnostic functionality.
The SFP modules support a maximum bandwidth of up to 1.25 GBit/s and are suitable for Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit Fibre Channel. Various models are designed for different ranges and temperature conditions, including options for environments with extended requirements.
