The Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) is an exchangeable transceiver module used in compatible active devices. Its compact design makes it smaller than all currently available form factors, providing the highest density per line interface. Many modern networking devices are already equipped with slots for modular optical transceivers, offering users maximum flexibility in network configuration. Thanks to its special design, the SFP module can also be replaced during operation (hot-swap) without disrupting network performance.
The SFP module is selected based on the cable medium used (multimode, single mode, simplex, twisted pair) and the required bandwidth. Standards like the Multi Source Agreement (MSA) and the SFF-8472 specification ensure standardized design and optional digital diagnostic functions, extending the functionality of the transceivers.
SFP modules support a maximum bandwidth of up to 1.25 GBit/s and are compatible with Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit Fibre Channel. Different models are optimized for various ranges, wavelengths, and temperature conditions, including options for extended operating temperatures and long-distance transmission.
