MKR1000 combines the functionality of Zero and WiFi Shield. Perfect for IoT projects!
Overview
MKR1000 is designed to provide a practical and cost-effective solution for manufacturers who want to integrate WiFi connectivity into their projects and have minimal networking experience. The design includes a Li-Po charging circuit that allows the MKR1000 to work with batteries or external 5V and charge the Li-Po battery with external power. Switching from one source to another occurs automatically.
Technology
MKR1000 has good 32 bit computing power, similar to the Zero Board, the usual I/O interfaces, low power WiFi with a cryptochip for secure communication and the easy operation of the Genuino software (IDE) for code development and programming. All these features make this board the preferred choice for the emerging IoT battery powered projects in a compact form. The board comes with the connector header unmounted, so you can customize the board to your project by simply soldering it.
Important note
In contrast to most Genuino boards, the MKR1000 runs at 3.3V. The maximum voltage the I/O pins can tolerate is 3.3V. Applying voltages greater than 3.3V to any I/O pin may damage the card. While output to 5V digital devices is possible, bidirectional communication with 5V devices requires correct level shifting. Li-Po batteries are charged at 4.2V at a current that is typically half the rated capacity (C/2).
For Genuino MKR1000 we use a special chip that has a preset charging current of 350mAh. This means that the minimum capacity of the Li-Po battery should be 700 mAh. Smaller cells are damaged by this current and can overheat, develop internal gases and explode, setting the surrounding area on fire. We strongly recommend choosing a Li-Po battery with at least 700mAh capacity. A larger cell will take more time to charge but will not be damaged or overheated. The chip is programmed with 4 hours of charging time and then goes into automatic sleep mode. This limits the charging amount to a maximum of 1400 mAh per charging round.
Genuino MKR1000 and Arduino MKR1000 share the same components, features and manufacturing qualities. They are actually the same board under a different brand. Depending on where you live, you can buy an Arduino MKR1000 or a Genuino MKR1000. Learn more.
The board is delivered with the pin header plug installed.
