With the law to protect against manipulation of digital basic records, the Bundestag and Bundesrat significantly tightened the regulations for the use of cash register systems and cash registers in December 2016. The first changes, such as the introduction of the cash register review, have been in force since 2018. As of January 1, 2020, the key points of the new regulations will now become binding. This involves the use of a so-called certified technical security device (TSE) with the cash register, an obligation to issue receipts and a reporting obligation for the cash registers and technical security devices. In addition, violations of the newly introduced obligations may result in fines of up to 25,000 euros as part of administrative offense proceedings.
