Each serial port features an integrated 64 KB port buffer, which prevents data loss during brief network outages or data overloads. The buffer size can optionally be expanded up to 32 GB via an SD card. The serial interfaces are configurable for RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485, with baud rates adjustable from 50 bps to 921.6 kbps, including non-standard baud rates. The serial connectors are implemented as 8-pin RJ45 connectors, ensuring a standardized and robust connection.

Encryption security is ensured through TLS 1.2, SSHv2, AES-128/256, HMAC, RSA-1024, and SHA-1/256/384. Authentication is performed locally, via RADIUS, or TACACS+.

Devices from the NPort 6600 series are designed for mounting in rack systems and can also be mounted on DIN rails or walls. Mounting and Installation
Installation is performed using the integrated LCD configuration display and button control (only on standard models of the 6600 series). Alternatively, configuration can be done via a web console (HTTP/HTTPS), Telnet/SSH, DSU, or the MCC tool. The operating temperature is 0 to 55 °C (standard version), with HV models capable of operating up to 85 °C. Relative humidity is 5–95 % (non-condensing). The enclosures are made of metal and meet requirements for industrial robustness.
