The NPort 6610-16-48V from Moxa is a
Device-Server from the NPort 6600 series, specifically designed for integrating serial devices into
TCP/IP networks. With 16 serial RS-232/422/485 interfaces, it enables the connection of legacy devices such as measuring instruments, controls, or industrial sensors to modern network infrastructures. The devices are designed for use in
industrial environments where high demands are placed on reliability, security, and operating temperature. Integrated
security functions such as TLS/SSH encryption and IEC 62443 compliance make the terminal server suitable for critical applications where data integrity and network security are prioritized.
Applications
The NPort 6610-16-48V is used in industrial automation systems, power supply networks, transportation infrastructures, and other areas where serial devices need to be accessed via Ethernet networks. It is particularly suitable for installations distributed over long distances, as it enables communication over existing networks without requiring additional cabling. The support for
RS-232/422/485 interfaces covers a wide range of industrial communication protocols.
Functions and Equipment in Detail
The terminal server features an integrated
64 KB port buffer that stores serial data when the Ethernet connection fails. Once the connection is restored, the stored data is automatically forwarded. This ensures uninterrupted communication even during short network outages. Optionally, the buffer storage can be extended via an
SD card (up to 32 GB) to compensate for longer data transmission interruptions. The devices support various operating modes, including
Real COM,
TCP/UDP Client and Server,
Pair Connection, as well as
Terminal and Reverse Terminal mode, partially in encrypted form. Configuration is performed via an integrated
LCD display, enabling local setup without network access.
Technology Explained Simply
The serial interfaces are implemented via
8-pin RJ45 connectors, enabling a compact and robust connection. The Ethernet interface supports
10/100BaseT(X) and can optionally be extended via
NM modules to enable, for example, fiber optic connections. Communication parameters are flexibly adjustable: baud rate from 50 bps to 921.6 kbps, data bits (5–8), stop bits (1, 1.5, 2), parity (None, Even, Odd, Space, Mark), and flow control (RTS/CTS, DTR/DSR, XON/XOFF). The
encryption technologies include AES-128/256, SHA-1/256/384, RSA-1024, and HMAC, ensuring secure data transmission. The devices support
IPv4/IPv6,
TCP/IP,
UDP,
HTTP/S,
SNMP v1/v2c/v3,
SSH v2,
TLS 1.2,
RADIUS, and
TACACS+, enabling integration into existing network environments.
Compatibility and Accessories
The NPort 6610-16-48V is compatible with a wide range of serial devices using RS-232/422/485 interfaces. The optional
NM modules allow expansion of Ethernet functionality, for example, via fiber optic adapters. The devices are designed for use in
rack systems and can be installed using the included
rack mounting brackets. A
DB9-to-RJ45 cable is also included in the delivery scope to connect to serial devices. Power supply is via
48 V DC, enabling use in industrial environments with corresponding power supply.
Mounting and Installation
Mounting is in standard 19-inch racks. The housing is made of metal and designed for industrial environments. Dimensions are 440 x 195 x 44 mm (without mounting ears). Installation is done using the included mounting brackets. Configuration can be performed locally via the LCD display, with a
quick installation guide provided. The devices are designed for operating temperatures from
-40 to 85 °C, enabling use in extreme environments.
Advantages in Operation
The NPort 6610-16-48V offers high
reliability with an MTBF of up to 850,000 hours. Integrated functions such as
WDT (Watchdog Timer),
RTC (Real-Time Clock), and an
audible alarm support operational safety. The alarm contacts (1 A @ 24 VDC) allow connection to external alarm systems. Support for
SD cards for buffer memory expansion increases flexibility in data transmission. The devices meet numerous certifications, including
EN 55032/35,
FCC Part 15B Class A,
IEC 61000-4-x,
UL 60950-1,
NEMA TS2,
RoHS,
WEEE, and
CRoHS, confirming compliance with international standards for electromagnetic compatibility, safety, and environmental compatibility.
The delivery scope includes the device itself, two rack mounting brackets, a DB9-to-RJ45 cable, a power supply unit or power cable (model-dependent), a quick installation guide, and a warranty card.
