The NPort® 6250 from Moxa is a
Device-Server with two serial ports, designed for integrating serial devices into an Ethernet network. It enables the transmission of serial data over IP networks and supports encrypted communication via
SSL and SSH protocols, enhancing data transfer security. The device is designed for use in industrial environments where connecting legacy or specialized serial devices to modern network infrastructures is required.
Applications
The NPort® 6250 is suitable for applications requiring network access to serial devices such as measuring instruments, controls, sensors, or industrial peripherals. It is commonly used in automation technology, building automation, energy technology, and process industries, where integrating existing serial systems into IP-based networks is necessary. Support for
RS232/422/485 interfaces makes it flexible for various serial communication standards.
Functions and Features in Detail
The device offers six operating modes: Real COM, TCP Server, TCP Client, Pair Connection, Terminal, and Reverse Terminal. These modes allow flexible adaptation to different network environments and requirements. The
automatic RS-485 data direction control is based on Moxa’s patented ADDC® technology, ensuring correct data transmission without additional hardware or manual settings. Support for all baud rates with high precision ensures reliable communication even at high transmission rates.
Technology Explained Simply
The NPort® 6250 features an internal
port buffer with 64 KB memory, which stores serial data when the Ethernet connection fails. This prevents data loss during temporary network disruptions. Once the connection is restored, the stored data is transmitted in the original order. The port buffer’s storage capacity can be expanded by installing an SD card, increasing flexibility for data buffering. The device supports both
10/100BaseTX copper Ethernet and
100BaseFX fiber optic networks, with compatibility for both single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables. This allows flexible selection of the network medium based on requirements for range and environmental conditions.
Compatibility and Accessories
The NPort® 6250 is designed for connecting to serial devices via RS232, RS422, and RS485. The network connection is made via Ethernet, with the option to choose between copper and fiber optic cables. Using fiber optic cables enables longer transmission distances and is particularly advantageous in environments with electromagnetic interference. The SD card is intended exclusively for expanding the port buffer memory and is not designed for other functions.
Mounting and Installation
Installation is performed via the serial interfaces and the Ethernet interface. Configuration can be done through a web interface or command-line tools. The devices are designed for industrial environments and do not require special mounting tools.
Operational Advantages
Thanks to integrated data buffering and support for encrypted transmission protocols, the NPort® 6250 offers high reliability and security. The automatic data direction control for RS-485 reduces configuration effort. The ability to expand the port buffer via an SD card increases flexibility for data transmission, especially in environments with intermittent network connections. Support for various operating modes allows adaptation to different network architectures and applications.
