The Moxa NPort 5650-8-S-SC is a
Device-Server with eight serial interfaces, integrating
RS-232/422/485 devices via
Ethernet and a
singlemode fibre optic cable (SC connector) into existing networks. It serves as a bridge between older, serially connected devices and modern IP-based network infrastructures, particularly in
industrial environments where high reliability and immunity to interference are required. The robust
metal housing and
19-inch rack mounting enable secure installation in server racks or industrial control enclosures. The integrated
fibre optic interface ensures
interference-free data transmission over long distances, enabling the integration of devices located at remote sites. The
Ethernet interface supports 10/100BaseT(X) and is equipped with
magnetic isolation of 1.5 kV, enhancing immunity to electrical interference.
Applications include industrial automation, production systems, security systems, and applications in the field of
safety-critical control technology. The Device-Server is suitable for environments requiring a stable, long-term connection between serial end devices and a network, for example in manufacturing, monitoring systems, or energy supply. The
operating temperature of 0 to 60 °C and
storage temperature of -20 to 70 °C make it suitable for indoor and outdoor use, provided the humidity is between 5 and 95 % (non-condensing).
Functions and equipment in detail include eight serial RJ45 connectors, supporting
RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 depending on configuration.
Baud rates can be set from 50 bps to 921.6 kbps, with
data bits (5–8), stop bits (1, 1.5, 2) and
parity types (none, even, odd, Space, Mark) configurable flexibly.
Flow control is handled via RTS/CTS, DTR/DSR, or XON/XOFF. For RS-485 applications, integrated
pull-up/down resistors (1 kΩ / 150 kΩ) and a
120 Ω terminator are provided.
Data direction control is automatic via ADDC (Automatic Data Direction Control). The serial signals include TxD, RxD, RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, DCD, GND for RS-232, Tx±, Rx±, GND for RS-422 and RS-485-4w, and Data±, GND for RS-485-2w.
Technology explained simply shows that the Device-Server functions as an
Ethernet bridge: serial data from connected devices is converted into IP packets and transmitted over the network. The
fibre optic interface enables
long range without signal loss, as light signals in the fibre optic cable are not affected by electromagnetic interference. The
magnetic isolation protects against voltage surges and potential differences between networks.
Software configuration is performed via Telnet, a web console (HTTP/HTTPS), or a Windows utility, allowing remote setup. The
network protocols include TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, ARP, DHCP, DNS, SMTP, SNMPv1/v2c, SNMPv3, LLDP, RFC2217, PPP, SLIP, Rtelnet, and BOOTP.
Time management is handled via SNTP, enabling synchronized time display in the network.
Compatibility and accessories include a wide range of operating systems:
Windows (95 to 11, Server 2003 to 2022, Embedded CE 6.0/5.0, XP Embedded),
Linux (kernel 2.4.x to 6.x),
macOS (10.12 to 11.x),
ARM platforms (kernel 4.x/5.x), and
VM support for VMware ESXi, Fusion, and Parallels (macOS up to 11.x). Support for Android systems is available from API level 3.1.x. The
Real COM drivers enable the use of serial ports as virtual COM ports under Windows, simplifying integration into existing software solutions.
Security features include authentication via a local database, encryption with HTTPS (TLS 1.2), AES-128, RSA-1024, SHA-1/256, and SNMPv3 for secure network management.
Mounting and installation are performed using the integrated
19-inch rack mounting bracket, with the device measuring 480 × 45 × 198 mm with bracket, and 440 × 45 × 198 mm without bracket.
Operation is via an
LCD panel with buttons, enabling local configuration and status display.
Power supply is 100–240 VAC, 47–63 Hz, with power consumption of 164 mA at 100 VAC. An integrated
watchdog timer ensures automatic recovery in case of failure, enhancing
reliability. The
MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is 738,291 hours according to MIL-HDBK-217F, indicating high operational reliability.
Operational advantages include
interference-resistant data transmission via fibre optic,
easy integration into existing networks,
broad operating system support, and
secure configuration via HTTPS and SNMPv3. The
rack mounting and
metal housing ensure professional integration into industrial environments.
Local operation via LCD and buttons enables quick diagnosis and setup on-site.
Certifications include EMC (EN 55032/35), EMI (CISPR 32, FCC Part 15B Class A), EMS (IEC 61000-4-2/-3/-4/-5/-6/-8/-11), Safety (UL 62368-1), and Medical Technology (EN 55011 Class A, EN 60601-1-2), ensuring suitability for various industries. The
5-year warranty underscores the quality and longevity of the device.
