The Moxa NPort 5650-16 is an industrial-grade Device-Server with 16 serial ports, specifically designed for Rackmount in 19-inch systems. It enables the integration of serial devices such as sensors, controls, or measuring instruments into an Ethernet network. The 16 serial interfaces are implemented as 8-pin RJ45 sockets and support the standards RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485, allowing flexible connection to various industrial peripheral devices. The serial ports offer a high data transfer rate of up to 921,600 bps and support various configurations such as data bits (5–8), stop bits (1, 1.5, 2), and parity types (none, even, odd, Space, Mark). Flow control is achieved via RTS/CTS, DTR/DSR, or XON/XOFF. For RS-485 applications, automatic data direction control (ADDC) is integrated, along with a 120 Ω terminator and pull resistors of 1 kΩ and 150 kΩ.

Configuration is performed via a web console (HTTP/HTTPS), Telnet console, or a Windows utility. Software functions include management protocols such as ARP, DHCP, DNS, ICMP, IPv4, LLDP, RFC2217, SNMPv1/v2c, TCP/IP, Telnet, UDP, as well as SMTP and PPP. For time synchronization, SNTP is available. Platform support ranges from Windows 95 to 11 and Server 2003 to 2022, Linux kernel 2.4.x to 6.x, macOS 10.12 to 10.15 and 11.x, Android API from 3.1.x, as well as virtual machines such as VMware ESXi, Fusion, and Parallels.

The Device-Server acts as a bridge between serial devices and an IP network. Each serial port is made accessible over the network, enabling devices to be controlled or data retrieved via TCP/IP connections. The integrated security architecture includes authentication via a local database, encryption using AES-128, RSA-1024, SHA-1, and SHA-256, as well as HTTPS (TLS 1.2) and SNMPv3. This protects communication against unauthorized access. The integrated watchdog timer ensures automatic recovery in case of failure, increasing system availability.
