The Moxa NPort 5630-8 is an industrial Device-Server with eight serial ports, developed for integrating RS-422/RS-485 devices into Ethernet-based automation networks. It is designed for mounting in a 19-inch rack and features a robust metal housing suitable for industrial environments. Device connections are made via RJ45 connectors, with the serial interfaces implemented through 8-pin RJ45 ports. The unit supports a wide range of serial communication standards and enables data transmission over Ethernet networks, facilitating the integration of legacy or specialized devices into modern network infrastructures.

Applications

The NPort 5630-8 is used in industrial automation environments where serial devices such as sensors, controls, printers, or measuring instruments need to be accessed over Ethernet. It is particularly suitable for installations requiring high availability and electromagnetic immunity, such as in manufacturing, energy supply, or transportation. Support for RS-422 and RS-485 enables connection to a wide variety of industrial devices using these interfaces.

Functions and Features in Detail

The device features eight serial ports, each connected via 8-pin RJ45 connectors. The interfaces support RS-422 and RS-485 standards, with data transfer rates adjustable from 50 to 921.600 bps. Configuration of serial parameters such as data bits (5, 6, 7, 8), stop bits (1, 1.5, 2), and parity (none, even, odd, Space, Mark) is performed via the integrated configuration interface. Flow control can be managed via RTS/CTS, DTR/DSR, or XON/XOFF. For RS-485 applications, integrated pull-up and pull-down resistors (1 kΩ, 150 kΩ) as well as a 120 Ω termination resistor are provided. Data direction control is handled automatically via ADDC (Automatic Data Direction Control), simplifying use in multi-point networks.

Technology Explained Simply

The NPort 5630-8 operates as a device server, receiving serial data from connected devices and forwarding it over an Ethernet interface into an IP network. The Ethernet interface supports 10/100BaseT(X) and is implemented via an RJ45 connector. Magnetic isolation of 1.5 kV protects the device from electrical interference and voltage surges. Power supply is provided via a wide AC voltage range of 100 to 240 VAC at 47–63 Hz, enabling flexible installation in various locations. Power consumption is 152 mA at 100 VAC. An integrated watchdog timer ensures system stability and can automatically trigger a restart in case of failure.

Compatibility and Accessories

Device configuration can be performed via various interfaces: Telnet Console, Web Console (HTTP/HTTPS), or via a Windows utility software. Network management functions include protocols such as ARP, BOOTP, DHCP, DNS, ICMP, IPv4, LLDP, RFC2217, Rtelnet, PPP, SLIP, SMTP, SNMPv1/v2c, TCP/IP, Telnet, and UDP. Time synchronization is achieved via SNTP. Platform support includes Windows 95 to 11, Server 2003 to 2022, Linux Kernel 2.4.x to 6.x, macOS 10.12–10.15, 11.x, Android API from 3.1.x, as well as virtualization environments such as VMware ESXi, Fusion, and Parallels. Security features include authentication via a local database, encryption using HTTPS, AES-128, RSA-1024, SHA-1, SHA-256, and the use of HTTPS (TLS 1.2) and SNMPv3.

Mounting and Installation

The device is designed for mounting in a 19-inch rack. Physical dimensions are 480 x 45 x 198 mm (with mounting ears) or 440 x 45 x 198 mm (without ears). Weight is 2.510 g. The control interface consists of an LCD display and a keypad for making basic settings. Installation is performed using the provided mounting ears designed for rack fixation.

Operational Advantages

The NPort 5630-8 offers high reliability with an MTBF of 844,009 hours (according to MIL-HDBK-217F). Electromagnetic immunity complies with standards IEC 61000-4-2 to -4-11, ensuring stable operation in electromagnetically noisy environments. Certifications include EMC (EN 55032/35), EMI (CISPR 32, FCC Part 15B Class A), EMS (IEC 61000-4-2 to -4-11), Safety (UL 62368-1), and medical standards (EN 55011:2007+A2:2007 Class A, EN 60601-1-2:2007). Operating temperature ranges from 0 to 60 °C, storage temperature from -20 to 70 °C. Humidity is 5–95 % (non-condensing). Warranty is 5 years; further information is available at the specified website.
