The NPort 5450I from Moxa is a serial-to-Ethernet server with four serial ports, designed for integrating legacy devices into modern IP networks in industrial applications. The device supports the standards RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 and provides galvanic isolation of 2 kV to shield against electrical interference and voltage spikes in industrial operation. The Ethernet interface enables connection via 10/100BaseT(X) with RJ45 connector and features magnetic isolation of 1.5 kV, providing additional protection against electromagnetic interference.

Applications

The NPort 5450I is designed for use in industrial environments, particularly in facilities requiring high reliability and immunity to interference. It is suitable for connecting machine controls, sensors, printers, or other serial devices to a local network or the Internet. Support for DNV certification makes it suitable for use in the maritime industry. The medical certification according to EN 60601-1-2 Class B extends its application range to medical facilities, where electromagnetic compatibility and safety are critical.

Functions and Equipment in Detail

The device features four serial ports with DB9 male connectors, which can be configured as RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 depending on the application. Baud rates can be set between 50 and 921,600 bps, with data bits (5–8), stop bits (1, 1.5, 2), and parity types (none, even, odd, Space, Mark) adjustable flexibly. For RS-485, pull resistors (1 kΩ, 150 kΩ) and a terminator (120 Ω) are integrated, with data direction control automatically handled via ADDC. Flow control is supported via RTS/CTS and DTR/DSR (RS-232 only).

Technology Explained Simply

The galvanic isolation of 2 kV protects the serial ports from voltage spikes and electrical interference, which are common in industrial environments. The magnetic isolation of the Ethernet interface (1.5 kV) protects network communication from electromagnetic interference. The serial-to-Ethernet function enables control of serial devices and data transmission over an IP network without requiring physical cable connections between devices. Configuration is done via Web Console (HTTP/HTTPS), Telnet, or a Windows utility software, with HTTPS using TLS 1.2 and SNMPv3 ensuring secure communication.

Compatibility and Accessories

The NPort 5450I supports a wide range of operating systems, including Windows 95 to 11, Server 2000 to 2022, Linux Kernel 2.4.x to 6.x, macOS 10.12 to 11.x, various UNIX systems, and Android API from 3.1.x. Driver support for virtualization platforms such as VMware, Fusion, and Parallels enables use in virtualized environments. Network services include ARP, BOOTP, DHCP, DNS, ICMP, LLDP, Rtelnet, SMTP, TCP/IP, UDP, and SNTP, making integration into existing networks simple and flexible.

Mounting and Installation

The device can be mounted on a desk, on a wall, or on a DIN rail (optional). The metal housing provides mechanical stability and protection. Dimensions are 181 mm (with ears) or 158 mm (without ears) in length, 103 mm in width, and 33 mm in height. Configuration is done via an integrated LCD display and buttons, enabling local setup without a PC. Power supply is provided via two inputs: terminal block and hollow pin connector, with an input voltage of 12 to 48 VDC (24 VDC for DNV-compliant applications). Power consumption is 550 mA at 12 VDC.

Operational Advantages

The NPort 5450I offers high operational reliability with an integrated watchdog timer that triggers an automatic restart in case of system failure. An RTC (Real-Time Clock) and a buzzer enable alarm signal output. The MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is 678,381 hours according to Telcordia TR/SR, highlighting high reliability. Certifications according to EN 55032/35, CISPR 32, FCC Part 15B Class A, IEC 61000-4-2 to -4-11, UL 62368-1, DNV, and EN 60601-1-2 Class B ensure compliance with international standards for EMC, safety, and medical applications. The warranty is 5 years.

Operating temperature ranges from 0 to 55 °C, storage temperature from -40 to 75 °C. Humidity is 5–95 % (non-condensing), enabling flexible use in various environments.

Note: Batteries are not included in the delivery scope.
