The Moxa NPort 5450-T is an industrial 4-port device server that integrates serial devices over Ethernet into existing networks. It enables communication between serial end devices and IP-based systems, allowing legacy devices to be integrated into modern network infrastructures. The device features four serial ports that can be configured independently, enabling different protocols and requirements within a facility to be covered. The serial interfaces support RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485, with the 5450 models offering all three standards combined. Serial parameters are flexibly adjustable: baud rates from 50 to 921,600 bps, data bits from 5 to 8, stop bits 1, 1.5 or 2, parities such as None, Even, Odd, Space or Mark, and flow controls like RTS/CTS, DTR/DSR or XON/XOFF are available. For RS-485 applications, automatic direction control (ADDC) is integrated, and termination resistors (120 Ohm) as well as pull resistors (1 kΩ, 150 kΩ) can be set. The isolation is 2 kV, which applies to the 5450I and 5450I-T models, but not to the -T model without isolation.
Applications
The NPort 5450-T is designed for industrial environments where robust, reliable, and flexible serial network integration is required. It is suitable for applications in manufacturing automation, power supply, transportation, and the maritime sector, where DNV certification is relevant. The -T version offers an extended operating temperature range of -40 to 75 °C, making it suitable for locations with extreme climatic conditions. The storage temperature is also between -40 and 75 °C, and the humidity is 5 to 95 % RH, non-condensing. The robust metal housing construction protects the device from mechanical influences and electromagnetic interference.
Functions and Equipment in Detail
The device features an Ethernet connection (10/100BaseT(X), RJ45) with 1.5 kV isolation, ensuring a secure network connection. The serial connections are implemented as DB9 male, enabling a standard connection for many industrial devices. Configuration is done via a web console, Telnet, or Windows utility software, allowing settings to be made remotely. Operating modes include Real COM, TCP Server/Client, UDP, Ethernet Modem, Pair Connection, Reverse Telnet, and Disabled, covering a wide range of communication requirements. Network functions include protocols such as TCP/IP, UDP, SNMPv1/v2c/v3, LLDP, DHCP, SMTP, IGMP, and Rtelnet, as well as time management via SNTP.
Technology Explained Simply
The device server acts as a bridge between serial devices and Ethernet networks. It converts serial data into IP packets and forwards them over the network. The serial ports can be configured individually, allowing different devices with different parameters to be connected. The dual power supply (via terminal block and hollow pin connector) increases reliability, as a failure of one power source does not cause the device to stop. Power supply is via 12–48 VDC, with 24 VDC intended for DNV certification. Power consumption is 550 mA for the 5450I-T model.
Compatibility and Accessories
The NPort 5450-T is compatible with a wide range of operating systems, including Windows 95 to 11, Server 2000 to 2022, Linux Kernel 2.4 to 6.x, macOS 10.12 to 11.x, various UNIX systems (SCO, QNX, Solaris, AIX, FreeBSD, HP-UX), as well as Android from API level 3.1. Virtualization environments such as VMware, Parallels, and Fusion are also supported. Security functions include authentication via local users and encryption via HTTPS (TLS 1.2), AES-128, RSA-1024, and SHA-1/256.
Mounting and Installation
The device can be mounted on a desktop, on a wall, or on a DIN rail (optional). Dimensions are 181 × 103 × 33 mm (with mounting ears) or 158 × 103 × 33 mm (without ears). Weight is 740 g. Mounting is done via integrated ears or the optional DIN rail adapter. Installation requires connecting serial devices via DB9 connectors and the network connection via RJ45. Configuration is done via the web console or software, with the quick start guide included in the delivery scope.
Advantages in Operation
The NPort 5450-T offers high flexibility through the independent configurability of the four serial ports. Support for many operating systems and protocols simplifies integration into existing systems. The robust metal housing construction and extended temperature range (-40 to 75 °C) make the device suitable for demanding industrial environments. The dual power supply increases availability, and certifications (EN 55032/35, FCC, UL 62368-1, EN 60601-1-2, DNV) guarantee safety and reliability. The MTBF is up to 1,213,993 hours, indicating high longevity and low failure probability. The warranty is 5 years.
