The NPort 5150AI-M12-CT from Moxa is a
Device-Server for use in
railway technology applications, particularly in
rolling stock or
trackside systems. It enables the integration of serial end devices with RS-232/422/485 interfaces into modern Ethernet networks. The device features an
M12 network connection and a
metal housing with
IP40 protection rating, making it suitable for harsh, vibration-intensive environments. Compliance with standards
EN 50155 and
EN 50121-4 ensures reliability in railway installations. The model designation -CT indicates an
optional PCB-Conformal Coating, providing additional protection against moisture and contamination.
Applications include integrating industrial sensors, controls, communication devices, or other serial devices into existing IP-based networks. The devices are specifically designed for use in vehicles, at railway stations, or in other fixed but mechanically stressed environments.
Vibration resistance according to IEC 60068-2-6 ensures stable operation under dynamic conditions.
Functions and equipment in detail include a serial interface with DB9 connector, supporting
RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485. The baud rate can be set between
50 bps and 921.6 kbps, with configurable data bits (5–8), stop bits (1, 1.5, 2), and parity types (none, even, odd, Space, Mark). Flow control is supported via RTS/CTS, DTR/DSR, or XON/XOFF. For RS-485, automatic data direction control (ADDC) is integrated. The serial interfaces are equipped with
2 kV isolation to prevent interference and damage from voltage spikes.
Technology explained simply shows that the Device-Server features an
Ethernet connection with M12 D-coded connector (4-pin, female), designed for robust industrial connections. Configuration is performed via Web interface (HTTP/HTTPS), Telnet, Windows Utility, DSU, or MCC Tool. Supported network protocols include
TCP/IP, UDP, SNMP v1/v2c/v3, BOOTP, DHCP, DNS, LLDP, ICMP, and SMTP. The integrated
SNMP monitoring enables remote monitoring of the device, and
UDP Multicast supports data transmission to multiple recipients simultaneously. The
3-step web configuration simplifies setup.
Compatibility and accessories include broad support for operating systems:
Windows (95 to 11, Server 2000 to 2022, XP Embedded, CE 5.0/6.0),
Linux (Kernel 2.4.x to 5.x),
macOS (10.12 to 10.15),
UNIX (SCO, QNX, Solaris, FreeBSD, AIX, HP-UX), as well as
Android API ≥ 3.1. Driver support for Real COM/TTY drivers allows the serial interfaces to be used as physical COM ports. Security features include
HTTPS and
AES encryption to protect data transmission.
Mounting and installation are performed via the robust metal housing, suitable for mounting on control panels or in enclosures. Power supply is via an
M12 A-coded, 5-pin connector (male) with an input voltage of
12 to 48 VDC. Power consumption is
310 mA at 12 VDC. Operating temperature ranges from
-25 °C to 55 °C (standard), with an extended version available from
-40 °C to 75 °C. Storage temperature ranges from
-40 °C to 85 °C, and humidity is
5 to 95 % (non-condensing).
Operational advantages include high reliability, demonstrated by certifications
EN 50121-4, EN 50155, EN 55032/35, FCC, CISPR 32, IEC 61000-4-2 to -4-8, UL 60950-1, RoHS, CRoHS, and WEEE. The
MTBF (Telcordia TR/SR) for model 5150AI-M12 is
789,341 hours, indicating high operational reliability. The integrated
SNMP monitoring and
3-step web configuration reduce setup time and simplify maintenance.
