The NPort 5110-T from Moxa is a 1-port RS-232
device server from the NPort 5100 series, designed for use in industrial environments with high requirements for reliability and temperature resistance. It enables network connectivity for serial devices over Ethernet, allowing legacy systems to be integrated into modern networks. The robust construction and extended temperature range make it particularly suitable for applications in outdoor environments or harsh production settings.
Applications
The NPort 5110-T is used in industrial automation projects where serial devices such as sensors, controls, printers, or measuring instruments need to be accessible over a network. It is ideal for installations operated in demanding climatic conditions, such as in manufacturing, energy, or logistics. Support for multiple operating systems, including virtualization environments and ARM-based platforms, expands its applicability in modern IT infrastructures.
Functions and Features in Detail
The device server features a serial interface with a DB9 male connector supporting the
RS-232 standard. It offers various operating modes, including Real COM, TCP Server/Client, UDP, Ethernet Modem, Pair Connection, and Reverse Telnet, to flexibly adapt to different network environments. The baud rate can be set between 110 bps and 230.4 kbps, with configurable data bits (5–8), stop bits (1, 1.5, 2), and parity types (None, Even, Odd, Space, Mark). Flow control is supported via RTS/CTS, DTR/DSR, or XON/XOFF. Signals TxD, RxD, RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, DCD, and GND are supported.
Technology Explained Simply
The Ethernet interface operates at 10/100BaseT(X) via an RJ45 connector and provides magnetic isolation of 1.5 kV, enhancing immunity to interference. Configuration is possible via Web Console (HTTP), Telnet Console, Serial Console, or a Windows utility. Supported protocols include DHCP, BOOTP, IPv4, TCP/IP, UDP, HTTP, SMTP, SNMPv1, DNS, ARP, Telnet, and ICMP. MIB support follows RFC1213 and RFC1317. Power supply is via a power socket with an input range of 12 to 48 VDC; at 12 VDC, the power consumption is 128.7 mA.
Compatibility and Accessories
The NPort 5110-T is compatible with a wide range of operating systems, including Windows (95 to 11, Server 2000 to 2022), Linux (kernel 2.4.x to 6.x), various UNIX systems (SCO, QNX, Solaris, FreeBSD, AIX, HP-UX), macOS (10.1x to 14), embedded systems (WinCE 5.0/6.0, Windows XP Embedded), as well as virtualization environments (VMware ESXi/Fusion, Parallels Desktop) and Android API from version 3.1.x. Local authentication is performed via password.
Mounting and Installation
The device features a metal housing and can be mounted in desktop position, on a wall, or optionally on a DIN rail. Dimensions are 75.2 x 80 x 22 mm (with mounting ears) or 52 x 80 x 22 mm (without ears), and the weight is 340 g. Mounting requires no additional tools, with DIN rail mounting being optional.
Operational Advantages
The NPort 5110-T is characterized by high operational reliability, including integrated ESD and overvoltage protection according to IEC 61000-4-2 (4 kV contact, 8 kV air) and IEC 61000-4-5 (1 kV). The operating temperature ranges from -40 to 75 °C, making it suitable for extreme environmental conditions. Humidity can range from 5 to 95 % (non-condensing). Certifications include safety standards (EN/IEC 62368-1, UL 60950-1), EMC (EN 55032/35, CISPR 32, FCC Part 15B Class A), and additional protections according to IEC 61000-4. The MTBF is 3,126,448 hours according to Telcordia Standard TR/SR. The manufacturer’s warranty covers 5 years.
