The Moxa MGate 4101I-MB-PBS is an industrial-grade gateway that connects Modbus RTU/ASCII devices with PROFIBUS DP V0 controllers such as Siemens S7-300/400. It serves as a bridge between serial fieldbus systems and industrial automation networks, enabling the integration of heterogeneous devices into existing control environments. Setup is simplified by the QuickLink function, which automatically detects Modbus queries and converts them into I/O mappings, allowing configuration to be completed within minutes. The device is designed for use in demanding industrial environments, with a robust metal housing, DIN rail mounting, and redundant power supply ensuring reliability.

Applications
This gateway is suitable for applications in the industrial automation sector, particularly in production facilities, energy supply, building technology, and transportation infrastructure. It enables communication between Modbus devices, such as sensors, actuators, or frequency converters, and PROFIBUS-based controllers. Support for Modbus RTU/ASCII in both master and slave mode, as well as PROFIBUS DP V0 as a slave, extends compatibility with a wide range of devices and systems. The integrated 2 kV isolation on the serial interface protects against interference and voltage spikes, which is especially important in electrically noisy environments.

Functions and Features in Detail
The device features a serial interface with RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 standards, implemented via a DB9 male connector. The baud rate can be set between 50 bps and 921.6 kbps, with configurable data bits (7 or 8), stop bits (1 or 2), and parity types (none, even, odd, Space, Mark). Flow control is managed via DTR/DSR and RTS/CTS. The RS-485 interface supports Auto Data Direction Control and includes an integrated termination resistor of 120 Ohm. The PROFIBUS interface is implemented via a DB9 female connector, with a baud rate ranging from 9600 bps to 12 Mbps. Addressing is done via a rotary switch (0–99) or software (100–125). As a DP-V0 slave, the device supports a maximum I/O data length of 7744 bytes per input and output, with up to 24 modules per side and 32 sides in total.

Technology Explained Simply
The integrated 2 kV isolation on the serial interface protects the device from electrical interference and voltage spikes caused by differing ground potentials or inductive noise. The redundant power supply with two DC inputs (12–48 VDC) increases availability, allowing the device to continue operating even if one power source fails. Power consumption is 275 mA at 12 VDC. An integrated relay output (1 A @ 24 VDC, resistive load) enables additional functions such as alarm notifications or maintenance signals. The operating temperature for standard models ranges from 0 to 60 °C, while T-models can operate from -40 to 75 °C. Storage is possible between -40 and 85 °C, with a humidity range of 5–95 % (non-condensing). The housing is made of metal and complies with IP30 protection rating, providing protection against electric shock and large foreign objects.

Compatibility and Accessories
The gateway supports Modbus RTU/ASCII in both master and slave mode, as well as PROFIBUS DP V0 as a slave. Supported Modbus functions include 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 15, 16, and 23. The maximum number of Modbus commands is 100. Compatibility with Siemens S7-300/400 controllers is explicitly stated. The device is certified for use in hazardous areas according to ATEX, Class I Division 2, and IECEx. Certifications include EMC (EN 55032/35, CISPR 32, FCC Part 15B Class A), EMS (IEC 61000-4-2/3/4/5/6/8), Safety (IEC/UL 60950-1, IEC/UL 62368-1), and environmental standards (RoHS, WEEE). The MTBF (mean time between failures) is 1,537,948 hours for standard models and 1,315,666 hours for I-models, measured according to Telcordia SR332.

Mounting and Installation
Mounting is done via a DIN rail, with a recommended M3x3 mm Nylok screw for securing. Power supply is provided via screw terminals (Euroblock) in the range of 12–48 VDC. Configuration is facilitated by the included console cable (RJ45-to-DB9) and the Quick Installation Guide. Setup is performed using the QuickLink function, which automatically detects Modbus queries and converts them into I/O mappings, eliminating the need for manual parameter entry.

Operational Advantages
The gateway offers high reliability due to redundant power supply, robust metal housing, and integrated isolation. The QuickLink function significantly reduces setup time. Support for multiple Modbus functions and high maximum I/O data length enables integration of complex devices. Certifications for hazardous areas expand the application range in sensitive environments. The 5-year manufacturer’s warranty underscores the product’s quality.

Scope of Delivery
The device is delivered with an RJ45-to-DB9 console cable, a DIN rail mounting kit, a Quick Installation Guide, and a warranty card.
