The Moxa EDS-619 is a compact, modular, managed Fast-Ethernet switch family specifically designed for industrial networks with high demand for fiber optic connections. The switch is suitable for critical infrastructures where high reliability, fast network recovery, and robust operating conditions are required. With up to 19 optical connections, the EDS-619 offers an exceptionally high density of fiber ports, achieved through four hot-swappable module slots. Each slot can be equipped with a 4-port module, supporting both copper and fiber modules. In total, up to 16 Fast-Ethernet and 3 Gigabit-Ethernet ports are available, enabling a flexible network architecture.
Applications
The EDS-619 series is designed for use in harsh industrial environments, particularly in power supply facilities, transportation infrastructure, manufacturing industry, and process automation. The robust design and extended operating temperature range of -40 to 75 °C allow operation under extreme environmental conditions. The IP30 housing is designed for DIN rail mounting, ensuring easy integration into existing enclosures.
Features and Equipment in Detail
The switch features intelligent redundancy technologies such as Turbo Ring and Turbo Chain, enabling recovery times of less than 20 ms. Additionally, the devices support STP, RSTP, and MSTP to prevent network loops and enhance network security. Port Trunking (LACP) allows aggregation of multiple physical ports into a single logical link, increasing bandwidth and redundancy. Network functions include VLAN support (port-based, IEEE 802.1Q, GVRP), QoS (IEEE 802.1p/1Q, TOS/DiffServ) with four priority queues, IGMP v1/v2 Snooping, GMRP, and protocol compatibility with EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, and PROFINET. For network management, various interfaces are available: Web-GUI, CLI, Telnet, serial console, Windows Utility, and MXstudio. Support for ABC-01 enables configuration backup.
Technology Explained Simply
The modular architecture of the EDS-619 allows for customizable port configuration, with the number of fiber and copper ports adjustable according to requirements. The hot-swappable capability of the modules allows replacement without network downtime. Redundancy functions such as Turbo Ring and Turbo Chain ensure that network connections are restored within less than 20 ms in case of a failure, which is crucial for time-critical applications. QoS functions prioritize data traffic to ensure reliable transmission of critical control and regulation signals. Integrated security includes IEEE 802.1X, HTTPS/SSL, SSH, TACACS+, RADIUS, and Port Lock to prevent unauthorized access. Broadcast storm protection prevents the network from being flooded with broadcast packets.
Compatibility and Accessories
The EDS-619 is compatible with various 4-port modules offering either copper or fiber connections. The module slots are hot-swappable, enabling flexible and maintenance-friendly network design. Network protocol support includes EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, and PROFINET, facilitating integration into existing industrial automation systems. Management is performed via multiple interfaces, including Web-GUI, CLI, Telnet, serial console, Windows Utility, and MXstudio.
Mounting and Installation
The device is designed for DIN rail mounting, enabling easy installation in enclosures. The IP30 housing protects against mechanical impacts and provides high protection against dust. The operating temperature range of -40 to 75 °C allows use in environments with extreme temperatures. Humidity is 5–95 % (non-condensing). An alarm output (relay, 1 A @ 24 VDC) and a digital input (+13 to +30 V for high, -30 to +3 V for low, max. 8 mA) enable integration into higher-level monitoring systems.
Operational Advantages
The EDS-619 offers high port density with up to 19 fiber connections, enabling network expansion without additional switches. Fast recovery from network failures via Turbo Ring and Turbo Chain ensures high availability. Comprehensive security functions and flexible management via multiple interfaces simplify operation and maintenance. Automatic alerts for exceptional events via email and relay output support proactive network monitoring.
