The MICROSENS MS657203X is a 6-port Gigabit Ethernet switch for industrial use, offered in the Entry Line series. It features 4 Twisted-Pair ports with Triple-Speed functionality (10/100/1000Base-T) as well as two SFP slots for 100/1000Base-X connections, with one of the SFP slots functioning as a Combo port that can be used either as an SFP or as a Twisted-Pair port. The switch is designed for operation in demanding environments and supports operating temperatures from -40 °C to +75 °C. Power supply is via DC voltage in the range of 12 to 56 V DC, with redundant power supply. The device is intended for mounting on a DIN rail holder (35 mm) according to DIN EN 50022 and can alternatively be wall-mounted. The housing is made of metal and provides protection rating IP30.
Applications
The switch is designed for industrial networking applications where high operational reliability and wide temperature tolerance are required. Typical applications include production plants, automation systems, building automation, or transportation technology. The robust design and support for DC operation over a wide voltage range make it particularly suitable for decentralized networks in factories or outdoor environments, where power supply often occurs via industrial DC networks.
Functions and Equipment in Detail
The switch features an integrated Autocrossing function, allowing standard patch cables to be used for all Twisted-Pair connections without requiring crossover cables. Autonegotiation automatically detects the transmission speed and duplex mode (full- or half-duplex) between connected devices. Port indicators (LEDs) signal the operating status: green light for link connection (steady) and activity (flashing). For the Combo port and SFP slots, DIP switches are available to select between SFP mode (100/1000Base-X) and TP mode (10/100/1000Base-T), as well as between 100 Mbit/s and 1000 Mbit/s. An alarm contact (1 A / 24 V max.) is also integrated, which activates in case of errors.
Technology Explained Simply
The switch operates as a Layer-2 device and is IEEE 802.3-compatible. The switching fabric provides a capacity of 12 Gbps, with data processing in Store-and-Forward mode. The MAC address table includes 1024 entries, and the packet buffer is 1 MB. Jumbo frames up to a size of 9 kBytes are supported, increasing efficiency when transmitting large data packets. Power supply is via a plug-in screw terminal, with connections P1, P2, and P3 (DIN connector 4-pin) available. Grounding is done via a separate grounding screw.
Compatibility and Accessories
Compatible modules include SFP transceivers for single-mode (1310 nm, 10 km) and multi-mode (850 nm), with some variants supporting DDM (Digital Diagnostic Monitoring). The SFP modules feature LC connectors and are designed for operating temperatures from -40 °C to +85 °C. Using SFP modules enables flexible network connections via fiber optic, especially over long distances or in environments with high electromagnetic interference.
Mounting and Installation
Mounting is either on a DIN rail holder (35 mm) according to DIN EN 50022 or wall-mounted. The device includes a DIN rail holder in the delivery scope. Installation requires no special configuration, as automatic functions (autonegotiation, autocrossing) automatically handle connection settings.
Operational Advantages
The switch offers high operational reliability through redundant power supply and robust construction. Support for DC voltage over a wide voltage range enables flexible integration into existing industrial power supply systems. Integrated DIP switches and LED indicators simplify commissioning and maintenance. The use of SFP modules expands network possibilities with fiber optic connections, increasing range and interference resistance. The IP30 protection rating protects the device from mechanical impacts and limited dust and splash water ingress, which is sufficient for many industrial environments.
