The phototransistor controls the collector-emitter current via the voltage applied to its base, like a conventional transistor. In addition, this current flow is also possible when sufficient light hits the transistor. It behaves in a similar way to a photoresistor, except that it makes the change in resistance more noticeable through its gain factor.
