This brick contains a capacitance diode. It operated in reverse direction, a controllable capacity. When a voltage is applied in the reverse direction, an isolated zone is created between the conductive layers in this diode. This increases as the reverse voltage increases and the capacity decreases. In this way, oscillations in electrical circuits can be controlled.
